The fundraising environment is competitive -- more competitive than in the past. Now it is even more important that nonprofits can write effective grant proposals. The best way to hone your fundraising skills is to build your grant writing skills secure funding is to build your grant writing skills. The key to finding funding opportunities and writing winning grant proposals is to know:

  • What a grant writer is and what they are not.
  • The value of grant writing teams. Who needs to be involved? What are their roles?
  • Grant Writing Basics (What is the FOA or RFP asking for? What are the components of a grant proposal? How to best address the FOA evaluation criteria.)
  • Resources for finding the best funding matches for the organization.

About the trainer: Bernard Turner, EdD

Dr. Bernard Turner is Chief Consulting Officer for Bernard Turner Consulting, a consulting firm assisting nonprofits to increase their capacity. He has nearly 25 years of experience writing and reviewing grants, and in his positions within the nonprofit and higher education fields, he has personally raised over $45 million in large and very small grants from foundations, corporations, the federal government, and other philanthropic organizations for numerous initiatives.

His current work includes: facilitating workshops such as Locating Funding Sources; Basic, Advanced, and Intensive Grant Writing for the Center for Nonprofit Management in Nashville, Tennessee, and he is a frequent grant reviewer for the Baptist Healing Trust, AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Turner is completing his third three-year term on the board of directors for the Grant Professionals Association (GPA), and currently serves on several nonprofit boards in Nashville.

In March 2008, he was one of 170 persons nationwide to be conferred the GPC (Grant Professional Certified) distinction from the Grant Professionals Certification Institute (GPCI). In June 2008, he was appointed to his current position of Assistant Professor, Social Entrepreneurship, and Director, Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Belmont University, the first institution of higher education to offer an undergraduate degree in Social Entrepreneurship. Additionally he has assisted minority and women-owned businesses contract with local and federal governments; conducted feasibility studies, and developed marketing and business plans.
